Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that in 2019 it would invest $ 1.5 billion to expand the national electricity transmission system capacity to 11,500 MW.
According to the Nigerian National transmission company TCN said that these investments will be divided into 59 projects have been put in place to achieve the 2019 national transmission capacity increased to 11,500 MW target.
By 2016, Nigeria will complete the first transmission capacity from 5500 MW to 6000 MW expansion. Then in 2017, increased to 7500 MW by 2018 increased to 8200 MW.
To complete the 2019 target, the construction of related facilities will be further strengthened, TCN is expected to total investment will reach $ 7.5 billion. In addition to giving the government $ 1.5 billion investment, TCN want to get $ 3.4 billion financing support in the form of loans, subsidies, aid and other international financial institutions. At the same time, TCN through its own earnings inject $ 2.6 billion investment.
At present, the domestic electricity demand of 12,000 megawatts in Nigeria, but the actual supply is only 4100 MW of generating capacity and transmission system deficiency is the main reason for the weak. As the power crisis, Nigeria is gradually losing its status as Africa's largest economy.
