Southern Cross Cable Company and Alcatel Submarine Network Company signed a contract to start building the NEXT submarine optical cable system of Southern Cross Cable Company.
The deal ensures that the manufacturing and construction phases of the project are about to begin, and Alcatel provides cable technology based on an open cable architecture.
This $350 million project will provide an additional 72 T-bit s/s capacity for Southern Cross customers, thereby increasing the existing 20 T-bit/s capacity of the current Southern Cross system.
Southern Cross Cable said that after completion in 2021, NEXT would become the largest and lowest delay link between the West Coast of the United States and Sydney and Auckland.
At the same time, it will provide critical interconnection infrastructure for the South Pacific, provide reliable direct information channels to connect Fiji, Tokelau, and Kiribati, and provide more options for existing cable systems from Vanuatu, Samoa and Tonga to the Southern Cross.
The solution is designed to provide enhanced reliability and network efficiency, as well as a minimum delay in the connection between major data centers in Sydney or Auckland, and Los Angeles.
The system will also provide all-fiber links for Auckland, and New Zealand, and will use branch offices and OADM technology to connect Fiji, Tokelau, and Kiribati.
