TANZAN, TANKAN - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Tanesco, a Tanzanian state power company, said in a statement posted on its official website that JICA, the African Development Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has raised US $ 258.2 million (US $ 1.74 billion) to build high-voltage transmission lines to connect Kenya.
According to the plan, the high-voltage transmission lines will be put into operation within 2 years, mainly used to promote trade between the two countries to improve the stability of the electricity supply between the two countries.
Tanesco said Tanzania-Kenya high voltage transmission line construction is Tanzania's main initiative to promote regional power trade. In the future, other cross-border transmission lines will be built to connect with neighboring countries to build East African power grid interconnection and strengthen regional energy security.
In 2014, Tanzania signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zambia and Kenya to raise US $ 1.2 billion to build a high-voltage transmission line connecting the three countries to further promote regional power supply security and stability.
